Bordering South Sudan to the west, Ethiopia’s Gambella Region has housed the Tierkidi Refugee Camp since February 2014, where, according to UNHCR, an estimated 64,000 people live, having fled conflict and insecurity. Though Tierkidi’s refugee population spans the spectrum of age and disposition, children under the age of 18 comprise a clear majority at 65 per cent.

Story summary: 

Nemo, 9, lives in Golijano Woreda of Somali region. She is a grade one student at Barkhadle primary school.

 “ I wake up early in the morning excited to come to school because I enjoy learning new things, the meal and playing with my friends,” said Nemo.

‘I love coming to school because at school we learn, play and eat our meals’ said Fatuma.

Fatuma, 9 is first grade student at Barkhadle primary school in Goljiano Woreda of Somali region. She attended the school readiness program for two months which helped her to understand and identify the alphabet and numbers. Now she is a grade one student.

“My name is Temesgen. I am 12 years old. I was born with a disability on my right leg.  This has affected me in so many ways. First of all it has affected my movement and it has also caused social exclusion especially from the family level”.
