Horn of Africa: Over 100 killed and 700,000 displaced by El Nino rains as region braces for more wild weather

NAIROBI, 16 November 2023 – Devastating flash floods have killed at least 111 people, including 16 children, across the Horn of Africa in recent weeks, with more than 770,000 people displaced and rains showing no signs of slowing down, said Save the Children.

Triumphing Over Hardship: The Story of Nebiyu

Nebiyu, a 10-year-old boy from Ethiopia's Amhara region, faced economic hardship and lived with relatives while attending first grade. His mother's illness confined her to bed, making life challenging for the family. Despite the difficulties, Nebiyu excelled in Amharic, his favorite subject, and dreamed of becoming a doctor.

Coming to school with no fear: Yanet’s Story

Yanet* is a 14-year-old- girl who is a 6th grader in Sidama Region. Yanet is one of the 2,374 children benefiting from Save the Children’s Global Partnership for Education (GPE) school feeding program at her primary school. When we asked her about the food, she had a huge smile on her face and said, "I just love the food they serve at school! But my absolute favorite is Kinche. I can't get enough of it, seriously!"
