Organized by READ CO, the USAID funded and Save the Children implemented project, the book event aimed to promote reading in schools and introduce supplementary reading titles made available by the project in 870 primary schools.

READ CO supports the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Regional Education Bureaus (REBs) to design and roll out a comprehensive and replicable community outreach model in support of improved reading achievement for primary grade students (grades 1 to 8).

The Sponsorship Program in Ethiopia received the global sponsorship award in “recognition for a focus on children” and exemplary management of the 2015-2016 school year in West Showa.

Azmera, nine, is a second grade student in Dalbo Wogane Primary School. She was a slow language learner at the beginning. But after she joined the reading camp in her school, Azmera has substantially improved her reading and writing skills.

“My reading and writing abilities have changed a lot after joining the club,” says Dinknesh Solomon, a grade 2 student participating in the READ Community Outreach program funded by USAID.
