Zahra(name changed for protection)15, is a grade six student at a primary school in Somali Region. Zahra is the second born for her parents who have four other children. Currently, Zahra and many other children in her village are no longer going to school due to the Coronavirus pandemic and are missing the school meals that, for most children at the village is often the only and most reliable daily meal. 

Zahra’s story in her own words (quotes):

Arsema* is a 14- year-old girl who lives in a small village in Tigray region, Ethiopia. Before the Coronavirus pandemic happened, Arsema was a grade seven student. An outstanding student, Arsema came in third in the last academic semester.  Then Schools were closed due to the pandemic and Arsema had to stay at home like 26 million other children across Ethiopia.

Here stands 28- year-old Arega Antonious Maru. He lives and ran a construction finishing work business in Addis Abeba, before the COVID -19 pandemic. 

Saeda is a 14-year-old girl who lives with her parents and her brother in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. Saeda is an 8th grader and a member of the children’s parliament in Addis Abeba that Save the Children supports through different local partners and school clubs. The support ensures that children and particularly adolescent girls like Saeda are meaningfully engaged in matters affecting their rights and advocate for other children’s rights themselves.
