Wednesday 1 April 2020

On March 5, 2020, Save the Children organized media briefing for girl parliamentarians ahead of International Women’s Day.

During the event, the five girl parliamentarians that represented different child parliaments in different sub cities and the President of Addis Abeba’s Child Parliament spoke to the press about how child parliaments are working to ensure children’s rights are protected.  Save the Children also applauded Child Parliaments all over the country for their remarkable achievements in giving children a voice and safeguarding their rights. Save the Children also announced it oversaw the cancellation of over 11,000 forced child marriages in Amhara region alone with the help of child parliaments.

Speaking at the event, 15- year- old Eden, who is a child parliament member and a leader of the child club at her school said, “Children can solve their own problems, they just need the chance to do it.”

Save the Children has been implementing various projects to protect and promote the rights of girls in the country in many ways.  Organizing such type of platforms that empower girls to speak about issues that affect them is one of them.   Save the Children also supports school clubs and Child parliaments all over Ethiopia so Children like Eden can participate meaningfully in decisions that affect them.
